Being Organized is Good for Your Health

9/28/2017

Are you disorganized? Do you have stacks of papers and stuff all over your desk, your office or your house? Clutter everywhere. Do you realize somewhere in your subconscious, you are aware of where things are in all of the clutter? Can you imagine the amount of energy and focus you would have if you didn’t use up all your potential just trying to remember where you put something?

Let’s call it “Brain Drain!” Having to think about where you have placed items in a crowded room is like finding a “needle in a haystack” all the time. What a massive waste of energy!

When was the last time you “forgot” where you put something? How long did it take you to find it? The interesting thing for people that are disorganized is when you find what you were looking for – you feel thrilled and happy and almost reward yourself for being able to find something in all the chaos! While, virtually every time, an organized person will find what they are looking instantly.  And if the saying is true, “time is money.” How much time do you waste on a regular basis just looking for stuff? This will cost you financially, as well!

Therefore, being organized helps with your time management. If you don’t control how and where you spend your time, your time will control you and how you spend your time. Keeping to a schedule and a To-Do List will help you manage your time better and also manage tasks and things you want to complete.

As you go through your day, it helped keep you motivated and focused, as well as having mini rewards by being able to check off items as you get them completed. However, this is a learning process, however. Many of the most successful people in the world swear by managing their time and following it to the minute. Everything from waking up, showering, coffee, exercise, work, family time. Everything is scheduled.

The interesting thing about being “organized” is – it’s much like time management. You don’t know good time management until you have experienced wasting time and poor time management. You may not understand how being “disorganized” is negatively impacting your life until you become “organized.”

Being organized helps reduce stress and anxiety, which we know have many adverse effects on our overall health and well-being. However, to stress over a schedule and a To-Do List is also counterproductive. Therefore, we know becoming organized has many benefits to your overall health and well-being. Also, becoming well organized is a process, like almost anything else.

Begin with implementing a schedule with a time cushion to help you feel like you have more time than needed and a To-Do List to track your activities. One of such activity could be to clean and organize your surroundings. You will feel better and have more positive energy.

Walking is the easiest form of exercise

9/20/2017

Let this be the Step-tember to Remember...finish the month strong with a new daily routine!

More exercise is something everyone needs to focus on in their daily routine, and walking more may be the best way to do it. The good part – there are no instructions or equipment required. A reliable pair of shoes is about all you need to get started.

Stiff knees and hips certainly make it harder, but not impossible if you start gradually and wear shoes with plenty of cushioning. Most exercise guidelines state adults should get two-and-a-half hours of moderate-intensity exercise a week, and walking at a pace of 3 mph is considered moderate-intensity exercise.

Knowing this doesn't necessarily make you walk more. Some exercise experts say humans are naturally sedentary creatures, evolved to be couch potatoes long before there were couches (or potatoes). Living conditions often support inactivity. Researchers state there are health effects of "built environments," and studies show people in the suburbs and rely on cars to get around, exercise less than those who live in places with sidewalks and nearby shops.

Flip the Switch…

Get started this month by adding moderate-intensity walks to your daily routine. You will burn fat during and after this workout. There are a few options to suit your needs: a 10-minute routine for busy days and an indoor option during inclement weather. Do at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity walking on three nonconsecutive days a week. On alternate days, do lower-intensity activity for about 30 minutes per session. Remember, the more you walk, the more you will see and feel the results of your efforts. Also, having a partner or walking buddy is always a good idea – the encouragement and motivation will be a benefit for both parties. Now, step to it!

Financial Wellness is Good for Your Wellbeing

9/13/2017

Are you approaching retirement or are your retired? You may want to review your current financial situation.  Sound financial management is always important but becomes even more critical after you retire and lose the benefit of a regular paycheck. Your financial wellness and your physical wellness - go hand-in-hand for your overall wellbeing!

There are some risks you may face that could threaten your financial stability, including risky investments, medical issues, or even death, all of which could put you or your spouse in a challenging situation.  Below are a few financial tips that could improve your financial stability.  By implementing even one of these tips, you may experience a more comfortable and enjoyable retirement.

Guarantee Your Income
You probably have some form of guaranteed lifetime income from Social Security.  If you are fortunate, you may also have a pension benefit.  However, many retirees may find the need to fill in the gaps with income from savings, which may not be guaranteed.  You may run the risk of running out of money if you withdraw too much or if your investments decline in value.

Guaranteeing a portion of distributions from your retirement savings (“RMD”) is one way to minimize this risk.  RMD accomplishes this by the use of annuities, which offer a variety of ways in which to generate guaranteed* lifetime income.  Some also offer potential and downside risk protection.  If you’re worried about the sustainability of your retirement income, this may be an option worth exploring.

Get An Estate Plan
Haven’t you worked hard during your lifetime to accumulate assets, grow a family, and build a legacy?  You likely want that legacy passed onto your loved ones, and not erode during the final years of your life or after death.  A solid estate plan can help you avoid that risk by minimizing probate costs, managing taxes, and distributing your assets to loved ones in the manner that you wish.

When it comes to estate planning, there are many options, as there is no estate planning formula that works for everyone. Consult with a professional to analyze your needs and goals.  Many estate plans involve a will, beneficiary designations, and possibly even a living trust. Although many people assume that estate planning is only for challenges that could arise after you pass away, it is also important to consider tools to help you manage your assets and your health care treatment during your lifetime should you become incapacitated and unable to make your decisions. Power of attorney documents are a useful tool for managing incapacitation.

Long-Term Care Planning
As we age, the need for long-term medical care often becomes a reality for many people. Concerns about cost, location, care providers; in-home, assisted, skilled, or nursing care can become a daunting challenge. Some rely on savings, pensions, social security, reverse mortgages, or family members to support this expense.

Alleviate the stress associated with the need for care, and funding the cost, with proper planning. Investment portfolios that generate income and dividends, supplemented with pensions and Social Security may be enough to cover the cost. For those that can afford and qualify, long-term care insurance is an additional option. Reviewing life insurance policy riders or cash values may also be a source to assist with the cost of attention.

For those that served in the US Military, there is a hidden VA benefit called the Aid and Attendance with Housebound pension benefits. Created by Congress in 1952 and annually funded with billions of dollars to help offset costs of care for our Veterans and their spouses. This program may be the only lifeline available to protect those that protect us. As with any government-funded program, there are qualifications for eligibility to receive this benefit.
