Annual Check-Up for Preventative Health and Well-Being

6/9/2017

In a recent poll, 92% of Americans stated that they believe annual checkups are important, even if they feel fine as a part of preventative care. Particular groups such as children and seniors should have annual check-ups regardless, and of course, those with a history of health issues should have regular health care exams and routine physical examinations.

Fortunately, the concept of preventative care has become well accepted amongst Americans. Even though you feel well, it is important to have an annual checkup with your healthcare provider, if for no other reason than to have peace of mind.

However, there are other great reasons to have that annual check up! With peace of mind comes a reduction in stress, anxiety and worry about your well being. When you have a clean bill of health, as they say, you can continue to focus on maintaining your good health with exercise and a healthy diet. It also enables you to monitor and keep track of benchmarks and health indicators like your weight, height, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol that are everyday items that your doctor may measure during an exam.

Keeping track of these health indicators and annual benchmarks also enable you and your primary health care provider to see any significant changes that might be signs of other potential health issues. A sudden spike in your blood pressure warrants a test to determine cause and source, so a treatment plan is developed before the condition worsens.

A typical annual physical might include things like:
An exam catered to your age, gender, and specific risk factors
EKG to check for heart health
Examination of your respiratory health
Routine eye exam and testing

Skin screening to check your dermatological health
Lab tests, including blood and cholesterol levels
BMI (body mass index) testing
And additional screenings for appropriate cancer risk factors

These are only a few of the reasons annual checkups are important, but it also impacts the people around us that care about our well being. If they know you are in good health, then that gives them one less thing to worry about as well!

So, if you haven't had a check-up in a while, schedule a quick visit to confirm you are in tip-top shape so that you and your family can enjoy your summer.
