During the hot summer months, you become more aware of Ultraviolet light. And the damage UVB rays do to your skin, which drives you to wear more sunscreen. However, the Vision Council wants you to be more aware of what those UV rays do to your eyes and vision, not just during summer months, but also all year round; especially in the Southern ‘sunny’ states.
According to the American Optometric Association, the longer your eyes are exposed to solar radiation, which is considered UVA and UVB rays, the greater the risk of developing cataracts or macular degeneration later in life. And they suggest that whenever you spend time outdoors in the sun, wear quality sunglasses that offer UV protection.
To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should: block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation; screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light; have perfectly matched lenses in color and free of distortion and imperfection, and have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition. Darker lenses do not necessarily provide more UV protection.
And of course, you should do research to determine which are the best sunglasses to provide the appropriate coverage for your family and yourself. Not all sunglasses are the same and not all explicitly state that they have UV protection. Make sure to confirm that your kids are wearing sunglasses with UV protection, and for those that wear contacts that they have UV ray protection as well.
According to Trending Post, the three most popular brands of sunglasses are Ray Ban, Oakley and Maui Jim. Consumer Reports states “Tint, is mainly a matter of preference, but for best color perception, Prevent Blindness America, an eye health, and safety organization, recommends lenses that are gray, amber, brown, or green. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) suggests green for most users because it offers the color contrast with little or no color distortion.”
While we do not have our own brand of sunglasses to sell, we do encourage you to make sure you protect your eyesight and wear proper sunglasses regularly in order to protect those beautiful eyes and your kids too.
