
Groundhog Day began in 1887 when Clymer H. Freas, who was editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit, endorsed the town’s groundhog as the official Groundhog Day meteorologist. The largest gathering to celebrate this day is held in Punxsutawney, PA. The tradition remains highly acknowledged in the U.S., receiving widespread recognition from the 1993 movie Groundhog Day featuring actor Bill Murray.
Today (February 2, 2017), Phil saw his shadow. Supposedly, we will now enjoy spring much sooner this year. However, Phil is about 36% accurate according to those who track his annual prediction. Most meteorologists today will tell you, determining the weather more than one week out can be uncertain; watching climate conditions can assist in making predictions. Either way, we can all appreciate, Punxsutawney Phil and his followers have a beloved tradition – cherished by all who celebrate this annual event.
