Mind, Body...Food!

Your mental health, eating habit and exercise regiment, all go hand-in-hand. So let's explore the importance of your nutritional, physical and mental wellness.

Exercise combined with healthy eating keeps your brain on point and alert. Regular exercise is one way to improve brain function including those that challenge you to think carefully and fast, commonly known as brain exercises. Exercising regularly will assist in slowing down the mental aging process and aids you in processing information more efficiently.

Now, let's take a look at those foods that boost your energy to exercise and give you the mental focus you need to be alert and attentive each day. Keep it simple and utilize recipes that include the following: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, beans, eggs, low-fat dairy products poultry, fish, and nuts. Ensure the foods are low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars.

Remember, eating throughout the day maintains your brain and body giving it the fuel it needs. This will prevent a decrease in your blood sugar, which causes nervousness, irritability and other problems. Avoid skipping a meal, snacks, and water intake to ensure a steady energy level throughout your day.

Snacking will sustain your energy—and your ability to resist the vending machine—by packing healthy snacks. Keep nuts, whole or dried fruit or other portable food within your reach at all times.

Brainpower supplements can have a significant impact. Research that links nutrition and dementia is still in its infancy however the relationship between nutrients and brain health is worth exploring. Practicing a well-rounded diet gives our brain the best chance of avoiding disease. If your diet is unbalanced for whatever reason, you may want to consider a multivitamin and mineral complex and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement to help make up a few of the essentials. When considering a supplement, it's best to consult your doctor or a qualified healthcare professional.
