The concept of preventive care has become well accepted amongst Americans. Even though we feel well, it is important to have annual check ups with a healthcare provider, if for no other reason than to have peace of mind. Employers gain when employees safeguard their health.

Do you know the ‘wellness’ of your employee population? Expanding your wellness program to include preventive screenings will answer this question. All while affecting behavior changes in your workforce and the employee’s overall health. Employers can have a significant influence on their employees by encouraging annual preventive health check-ups. Promote prevention with an established wellness program.

Meliora has preventive exam tools allowing employers to customize a plan and manage employee tracking easy:
  • Individual scorecard for participants to track past/future exams
  • Align 100% benefit coverage with participant’s preventive exams
  • Administrators tools to approve/deny/override any exam
  • Aggregate reporting keeps the employer’s finger on the pulse of their population’s health and wellness

However, there are other great reasons to have an annual check up; reduction in stress, anxiety and worry about your overall wellbeing. When employees have a clean bill of health, they can continue to focus on maintaining good physical condition and a healthy diet. Also, they can monitor and track benchmarks and health indicators like weight, height, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol.

In a recent poll, 92% of Americans believe annual checkups are important, as a part of preventive care. Children and seniors should have regular check-ups, and of course, those with a history of health issues should have routine medical exams.
Employers can encourage and support annual screening campaigns, the most critical tests for both men and women are diabetes, vascular disease, blood pressure, cholesterol, colon cancer, and a thorough eye exam. These screening campaigns need to be employer endorsed or company offered and need to become standard practice.

Offering comprehensive physicals including biometric screenings along with onsite screenings and tests will ensure and happy healthy, and productive workforce. There may be an initial upfront cost to conduct these types of wellness campaigns, but the long-term benefits will be worth your investment. Once employees experience the benefits of these preventive measures, mainly supported by their employer, they will be more focused in the future on their well being.

For employees, keeping track of health indicators and annual benchmarks enables them and their primary health care provider to see any significant changes that might be signs of other potential health issues. A sudden spike in blood pressure warrants a test to determine cause and source. It's important to develop a treatment plan before the condition worsens.

Annual Checkup List should include some or all of these:
  1. Heart health, including an EKG
  2. Respiratory health
  3. Dermatology screening
  4. Blood test - cholesterol and sugar levels
  5. Body Mass Index test
  6. Vision exam and Hearing test
  7. A review catered to age, gender, and specific risk factors
  8. Additional screenings for appropriate cancer risk factors

Regular health exams and tests can help find problems before they start. They also can help find problems early, when chances for treatment and cure are better. By getting the right health services, screenings, and treatments, employees are taking steps that help their chances for living a longer, healthier life. Age, health and family history, lifestyle choices and other important factors impact what and how often they will need health care.
